With the big day just around the corner, we thought it would be interesting to explore all there is to know about Father’s Day! From how your Dad’s special day came about, to the most popular gift ideas, this blog post has it all…
“Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, storytellers, and singers of song.”
What is it and where did it come from?
A day of the year on which fathers, father figures and special male role models are celebrated and honored. Father’s Day was invented in the United States by Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, as a way to celebrate her own father who was a veteran of the Civil War and widower who raised six children. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and in the end she was successful.
When is it?
Father’s Day was first celebrated on June 19th 1910, as this is the birth month of Sonora’s beloved father. It wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day was officially made a holiday, when President Richard Nixon helped set aside the third Sunday in June for dads. So, in case you have trouble remembering, Father’s Day always falls on the third Sunday of every June.
Some countries use March 19th to celebrate Father’s Day as that is St Joseph’s Day, Jesus’s father on earth. Whereas in Thailand, Father’s Day is also the king’s birthday, which is on December 5th. It is traditional to carry out good deeds to mark the day, with many people giving blood, and celebrating with lots of fireworks.
Did you know…?
– Although Mother’s Day may be more traditionally associated with the giving of flowers, they also play a significant part in Father’s Day too, specifically roses. It was tradition to wear a red rose to signify that your father was still alive while a white rose indicated that your father was deceased.
– A tie is the most commonly purchased item of clothing for a Father’s Day gift, followed by electronic gadgets and a day or meal out. After those, gift vouchers are the next most popular gift for dads on Father’s Day.
– The first known record of the word “dad” was around the year 1500. Studies suggest that the origin of the word “dad” actually comes from the first noises that kids make. “Dad” or “Dada” also sound similar in many different languages and consists of two similar sounding consonants.
– Dads are getting older. According to the Office of National Statistics, the average age of a first-time father in the UK is 33.6. The age at which a man becomes a father for the first time has continued to rise over the last ten years. In fact, the average age of a first-time father in the UK has not been under 30 since the middle of the 1970s.
